STRATEGIEN GEGEN ARCHITEKTUR – CONSTRUCTIONS, SPACES AND SITES AS ELEMENTS IN FLUX
SCREENING
Strategien Gegen Architektur – the title is a direct reference to a series of compilation albums with early, raw, almost primordial material by the German industrial combo Einstürzende Neubauten – brings together the views of a number of visual artists and video-makers on the (modern) architectural space which surrounds them. A building, a site or a street is not regarded as a fixed element, but as something in flux: the subjects shown are in the process of formation, in transit or in decay, waiting for the demolition hammer. The works often have a playful undertone due to the use of animation techniques such as stop-motion, digital cut-and-paste, or the use of a model made of utility objects through which the camera moves on an adventurous journey. This is in contrast to Neubauten’s fear of the linear and oppressive character of newly-built concrete streets and blind spots in the urban fabric; however, some works invest in the history of a building or place while simultaneously also suggesting a possible future for it.
