SIRAH FOIGHEL BRUTMANN & EITAN EFRAT - SQUARE

At the exhibition Square, Sirah Foighel Brutmann and Eitan Efrat (both born in 1983 in Tel Aviv and currently living and working in Brussels) question the spatial and temporal potential when interpreting both moving and still photographic images. Furthermore, they also confront private lives and contemporary geopolitics. Their new collaborative installation Orientation (2014) consists of one-shot sequences performed on the White Square, a public sculpture by the sculptor Dani Karavan. The work focuses on notions of memory and experience—perceived as individual and collective—as inscriptions on a public sculpture.
Although the photographic material taken from the archives of André Brutmann (1947–2002) is the starting point of the two other works presented at the exhibition, they challenge the aesthetics of representation and historical narratives in a different way. In this respect, the film Printed Matter (2011) simply shows a selection of contact sheets commented by Brutmann’s partner Hanne Foighel, while the five-channel installation Journal (2013) combines repetitions of one-shot sequences, filmed at a photography exhibition, with a penetrating reflection about the intimacies of political history and the politics of intimate lives.
