JAN VROMMAN - DE GESCHIEDENIS VAN HET VARKEN (IN ONS)

It’s hard to find any other Belgian film or video maker whose work is more personal than that of Jan Vromman (1958). Averse to common practices in video art, he follows a path of his own adornment. He adheres to an unmistakable folk idiom. That goes also for De geschiedenis van het varken (in ons)/ (The History of the Pig (within us). Anywhere in the world, the pig is charged with symbolism, stories and images. The pig carries our passion and rejection. At the end of the day, pigs reveal people. And the greedy pig is the metaphor of a voracious world economy. But the gluttony of mankind is dangerous, and, for the first time in history, maybe fatal. To understand 'the pig in us', we have to write the 'history of the pig'.
