DEER STALKING

A study of how the body and its surroundings relate is recurring theme in Wim Catrysse’s early installations. In Deer Stalking, a single-channel installation from 1996, we notice a vague shape with antlers that seems to crawl about in a small space. Because of the stroboscopic light, the shape can only be seen at intervals. The viewer can see just enough to know that it is there, and just too little to know what it is doing. With this work Catrysse questions the factualness of our observations and he seeks to impose a strange feeling of discomfort and uncertainty on the viewer. Those feelings are intensified by the soundtrack, which reflects the movements of the shape.
