VACANCES
The subject of ‘Vacances’ is simple: a couple with a child, happy at first sight, sets out on a journey of which the goal and the destination remain unknown. In the hotel where they halt a letter is waiting for the young woman, which arouses some jealousy in her partner. Later on during the trip there is a car accident in which the man dies. The woman and her daughter travel on together. When it becomes clear that the story keeps repeating itself with small variations the spectator begins to doubt. Each mark disappears and one starts to wonder where the story starts and what would happen if it were to begin at a different place. Dufranne creates narrative diversions and leaves every clear linear development. The spectator keeps being confronted with the contingency of his reading and he is submerged in a story of doubling. This video repeats the ingredients the author takes to heart, among other things because of the voluntary and elliptic outline of the story which allows for multiple readings, the unspecified space and time and the crystallization of the image.
