A CLOSER LOOK – LECTURES AND DISCUSSIONS BY/ ABOUT ARTISTS
LECTURE - DISCUSSION
This lecture and debate series further investigates the work of the artists Jef Cornelis, Alexander Kluge, Angel Vergara Santiago and Jayce Salloum - artists who appear prominently in the Argos collection. Either the artists speak for themselves or lectures address aspects of their work. Jef Cornelis and Alexander Kluge are two monumental authors whose trademark is the combination of cultural criticism and intelligent forms of insubordination. In the context of the medium of television – for which their work is produced – the radical positions taken in both form and content that represent their work invariably turn it into a media-critical statement. Angel Vergara Santiago and Jayce Salloum share a socio-political engagement, as well as a preference for dealing with memory and historical documents. In Vergara’s case, this translates into an extensive corpus with a performative basis that can be characterized as associative and allegorical. In Salloum’s case, this is expressed in a more unassuming oeuvre with a somewhat essayistic and activist character.
