GÉRALDINE PY

As they finished the Ecole Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Marseille, Géraldine Py (1986, Belfort, Fance) and Roberto Verde (1981, Jesi, Italy) abandoned their individual art practice—they decided to work together and went to live in Brussels. With films, installations and sculptures, they explore empirical phenomena that occur in the animal realm or the inert world of matter. What fascinates them in both, are the mechanical properties. Their performances with animals or objects never look artificial—they merely stage an almost scientific observation. The artists elaborate specially adapted scenarios in which unpredictability is part of the modus operandi. These entropic adventures provide the landmarks for reflecting on a whole that is larger than the sum of its parts, which is also a “lateral thinking” (Edward de Bono) in which contriving an impossible or unrealistic solution can serve as a means to find a possible and innovative solution. These are concise anarchistic fabrications, precarious domestic solutions that extol the real within the surprising.
