ANTWERPEN-BERCHEM

In 225 stills, Jan Kempenaers shows all of the peculiarities of Berchem, a part of the city of Antwerp, Belgium. His photographs of marginal places/“non-places” where the urban and rural life, city and suburbia merge, seem at first strictly formal and without any critical or aesthetic concern. But the series of photographs slowly reveals a fascination for the Belgian semi-urban sprawl that speaks in a powerful way about the post-industrial condition.
