CINEMA IN TRANSIT: PETER WEIBEL
LECTURE
Peter Weibel (Odessa, 1944) is the director of ZKM, Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie in Karlsruhe, and one of the most influential curators and theoreticians operating on the crossing point between art, technology and science. After his studies in literature, cinema, medicine and logic, in Paris and Vienna, he applied himself from the 1960s to his artistic practise, which took him from experimental literature to performance, video and installation work. He was involved in the Vienna Actionist movement and he developed, along with the likes of Valie Export, his own take on “expanded cinema”. His work questions, first of all, the inherente laws and mechanisms of the media, and the way in which reality is set up. In his lecture he reflects on the new phase the relationship between art and cinema has ended up in, both institutionally and with regards to form.
