4 X 4 - EPISODES OF SINGAPORE ART : EPISODE 1 : CHEONG SOO PIENG – A DREAM OF TROPICAL LIFE

The first episode of ’4 X 4’ reflects on the painting ’A Dream of Tropical Life’, painted in 1959 by Cheong Soo Pieng (1917-1983). Cheong Soo Pieng was a driving force behind the development of Modernism in mid-20th-century Singapore. ’A Dream of Tropical Life’ was made using both Chinese ink drawing and the Western technique of gouache. In this episode, the camera moves constantly along the horizontal plane, resembling the composition of the painting, which shows no real beginning or end, nor a climatic moment.
