RIANTE CONTRÉE
The characters of this computer animation film have hardwired bodies with integrated monitors displaying organs such as hands, mouths, and buttocks. The integration of organic elements into a computer graphics environment provokes a sense of unease that is nevertheless quickly straightened by the playfulness of the male and females monitor-bodies. Vogel’s musical skills are directly evidenced in his rhythmic orchestration of the screen, his jazzy frolicking with image geometry and duration.
In the cheerful country you disturb the tomatoes and mushrooms,
In the cheerful country beings touch and shout cries of joy
In the cheerful country I approach a graceful creature.
These two beings resemble phasmids (from gr. Phasma - apparition): wingless insects, whose long-shaped bodies resemble the twigs and leaves they live on (several types, called walking sticks, also live in the south of France) - according to "Petit Larousse".
But "Riante Contree" tells an entirely different story ...
"It is an essay about multimedia," say some ...
"A film about the fragility of nature," say others...
"About the representations of crazy couples," you will say ...
But you are not there. Neither are the others. And neither am I.
This film was realized during the course of a post-graduate year at the computer science studio of the Ecole Superieure des Arts Decoratifs de Paris (ENSAD). The students worked mostly on Silicon Graphics Workstations with Explore software from Alias Wavefront and common software for Macintosh, such as Photoshop, etc.
