The isolated people of Nagorno-Karabakh have been living in a time vacuum ever since the 1994 ceasefire. They live in a self-declared independent state, but remain an unrecognized country, the result of an unresolved and long forgotten conflict that followed in the wake of the collapse of the Soviet Union. How do they feel about national identity in a country that doesn't exist? And how does their attachment to the land adds to the construction of this identity? His new video The Nation fits in Geenen's current research on (national) identity in relation to memory and land.
