KASSANDRA NAKAS - DISSECTING LIFE, ON ANA TORFS' ANATOMY

THURSDAY@ARGOS - LECTURE

Ana Torfs’ recent installation ANATOMY addresses the case of the murders of communist leaders Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht in 1919. Starting from a military file documenting the following trial in Berlin, Ana Torfs created a complex and compelling work. By distilling the statements and testimonies during the trial and re-staging them using a number of actors, she not only dissects these documents as a historical subject matter but also provides insight into the subjectivity that governs language. Torfs’ method of dissecting (written) speech stands as a metaphor for a more general artistic analysis of what language tells about a subject and the society it lives in, and how images can relate to that. This lecture will focus on the relationship between language and image in the work of Ana Torfs.

Kassandra Nakas is an arthistorian based in Berlin. She has written on contemporary art with a focus on visual culture and issues of representation.
