FROM BROODTHAERS TO BRAECKMAN

EXHIBITION - DISTRIBUTION

THIS EXHIBITION TAKES PLACE IN MUHKA, ANTWERP

The exhibition From Broodthaers to Braeckman. Photography in the visual arts in Belgium. illustrates by means of a number of representative examples how the medium of photography was introduced in the domain of the visual arts in Belgium, and how it evolved, in the years between the 60s and 90s, into an independent artistic medium. The exhibition starts with the photographic work of three "pioneers" of Conceptual Art in Belgium: Marcel Broodthaers, Jacques Charlier and Jef Geys, all of whom incorporated photography in their work from the early 1960s onward. With Broodthaers, this is mainly through, and because of, the reproducibility of the medium, with Charlier en Geys it is the link between art and social reality that prevails.

Next comes the breakthrough of Photo-Conceptualism in Belgium with works by Philippe van Snick, Danny Matthys, Lili Dujourie and CAP-artists Jacques Lennep, Jacques Louis Nyst and Jacques Lizène. The last section of the exhibition deals with the transition from photo-conceptual work to the photographic tableau – the growing mixture of photography and painting – in the oeuvres of Jan Vercruysse, Ria Pacquée, Liliane Vertessen and Dirk Braeckman.
