GELEGENHEITSARBEIT EINER SKLAVIN

Gelegenheitsarbeit einer Sklavin (In Part-Time Work of a Domestic Slave) is the second Kluge's film, after Abschied von gestern (1966), starring his sister Alexandra. Roswitha Bronski is a nurse married to the chemical engineer Franz Bronski and they have three children. Her world is a veritable maelstrom of chaos, marked by screaming children, an obnoxious, demanding, unemployed husband, tumult at a factory that risks the relocation. Roswitha has to support her family by running an illegal abortion clinic. Meanwhile, at the abortion clinic, doctors have begun refusing to pay referral fees, which puts Rosewitha in an extraordinarily challenging position. From then on, she puts aside her passivity and begins a journey to redefine herself as mother, wife and working woman, part of a society threatened by an early globalization.
