I LOVE RÜCKBAU

In 2015, Aglaia Konrad filmed the demolition of the iconic headquarters of BNP Paribas Fortis bank on Warandeberg in the heart of Brussels. In a short space of time, demolition machines dismantled the modernist building from the 1970s, designed by (interior) architects Hugo Van Kuyck, Jules Wabbes, and Christophe Gevers. The work refers to Aglaia Konrad's personal fascination with demolition work and to her own practice around architecture, urban space, and infrastructure. It is a critique of the one-sided relationship between humans and their built environment. It also reflects on vanity and how an entity can be reduced to dust in a short period of time.
