DO IT YOURSELF
Do It Yourself mocks the DIY video made for handymen about the most common home makeshift jobs. Instead of explaining how to fix a tap or install a lift gate, the video explains how Emilio López-Menchero prepares the two concrete shoe leathers of 18 centimetres that he considered his portable and human scaled monument for Berlin. If, in +18 Berlin (1998) we can see the reactions of the Berliners, in Do It Yourself, we follow step by step the preparation of the monument. A jazzy and cosy music leads the action, a voice-over gives the instructions, the artist follows them in a very meticulous way. Partly a gimmick to document his artwork, partly a joke about the medium, Do It Yourself is an entertaining call for action.
