PASSAGE
Passage is black and white video installation by Wim Catrysse from 1998. On the three screens we see the same tunnel-like space with a light at the end. Nothing is happening in the tunnel. On the second screen, suddenly a mouth appears at the end of the tunnel. The mouth blows into the tunnel, causing a low, monotonous sound. The same action is constantly repeated. The viewer has been misled. At first we got the impression of staring down a long, small tunnel, but because of what happens on the second screen, we discover the illusion involved: what we see is a scale model that is hardly larger than a human mouth.
