THIERRY FONTAINE - LE HURLOIR (OU LE CRI DE L’AUTRE)

EXHIBITION

An Internet connection between Etablissement d’en face Projects and a home in a busy area in the centre of Réunion, a French archipelago in the Indian Ocean, is the starting point for a reflection on the asymmetrical relations between the centres and margins of the world. With two microphones, the sound of the living environment of a family of six is captured. One microphone is installed in their living space, the other out in the street. Consciously recorded words as well as randomly caught sounds are transmitted in real-time to the exhibition space. Le Hurloir has already been installed in several locations around the world, each time connecting two places, related because of historical or economic tension. Thierry Fontaine, who originates from Réunion, primarily wishes to address the issues surrounding artistic and cultural exchanges i.e. the tendency to ‘folklorise’ a culture, validate global inequality and deepen symbolic ‘misère’. The voices, the words, the cries and the sounds in the background, coming from a marginalized area, a former colony or an area in the periphery of the Western world, are recontextualized, as an inversion of the traditional stream of communication, a feeling of priority and privilege.

Thierry Fontaine Thierry Fontaine (°1969) lives and works in Réunion, an island by the Eastern coast of Africa under French government. In his performances, sculptures and installations he questions the perception and the portrayal of the ‘other’ and the social-economic and racial construction of identity. At the same time he sheds a light on the idea and the context of cultural and artistic encounters, touching on the ethical dimension of art.
