SHELLY SILVER - A STRANGE NEW BEAUTY
BLACK BOX - SCREENING
Shelly Silver is a New York based artist utilizing video, film and photography. In her enigmatic narratives of contemporary identity, truth and fiction are constantly in doubt, the veracity of what is seen and what is not seen is questioned, and the way information is disclosed, withheld and mediated is pregnant with meaning. Her new film, A Strange New Beauty, is a disturbing intrusion into the luxurious homes of Silicon Valley. Using an aggressive soundtrack and a full frame often fractured into small rectangles covered by text, Silver reveals a deafening violence behind the glittering beauty and deceptively calm of this suburban landscape. There is no human presence, but the homes seem to contain a memory of disturbing events, to bear the traces of a savagery just off-screen. (Charlotte Selb, Revue 24 Images)
