WINY MAAS - MVRDV AFTER KM3

LECTURE

The lecture will focus on the relationship between architecture and design through specific case studies.Taking the theoretical framework of the highly acclaimed book KM3 as its point of departure, Maas will discuss how it is possible for architectural thinking to proceed and be applied following an intensive and almost exhaustive research process. KM3 has become a seminal work in that it proposes new ways of thinking about the homogenisation of landscape by extending this idea into a three-dimensional model, one that “generates space instead of consuming it” and encouragesvariety in form. The book is based on complex amounts of data which are then analysed and used as the basis for propositions which demonstrate a new way of thinking about urbanism, density and on the possibility of creating a ‘3D City’. Maas will talk about the implications of this data on architecture practice, physically as well as conceptually.

Winy Maas (1959) is the co-founder and co-director of MVRDV Rotterdam. He studied landscape architecture at RHSTL Boskoop and Architecture and Urbanism at the Technical University of Delft. He is currently a member of the research board of the National Planning Office, The Hague and staff member at the Berlage Institute Rotterdam. Between 2003/2004 he was visiting professor of Architectural Design at Yale University, New Haven.
