ALEX SCHUURBIERS

Alex Schuurbiers (she/her, NL, 1990) is a filmmaker and photographer living and working in Antwerp, Belgium. She is also the founding member of Ursula, a female-led collective of artists working with the moving image. Her research focusesses on hybrid realities and physical carriers of time, dealing with memory and its representation in film based works.

Her practice focuses on the texture of analogue film as an active contributor to her storytelling, where the temporal becomes tangible in meters of tape or film. She regularly works with organic materials and developers, souping, soiling and burrying film, look into the effects of organic matter and time passing on collected images. Her most recent film, Placeholder, is an attempt to gain more insight into cyclical, non-hierarchical narrative structures in regards to the subconscious and remembrance.

Alex's films include cine-essays En Vagues (2022) and Where I lay my head to rest (2023), experimental documentary Song of Homecoming (2024) and experimental short Placeholder (2025). Her films have been shown at Courtisane Festival, Breedbeeld Kortfilm Festival, Qyzqaras, WNDX Festival of Moving Image, Baltic Analog Lab and Rencontres Internationales Paris/Berlin, amongst others.
