ANGELO VERMEULEN

"Angelo Vermeulen obtained a degree in Biology and a Ph.D. in Sciences. He also followed a training in photographic art (at the Fine Arts Academy in Louvain) and he worked and studied at the Higher Institute for Fine Arts (HISK) in Antwerp. Supported and inspired by the British photographer Nick Waplington, with whom he collaborated in London, he also spanned a bridge between his scientific knowledge and fascination and artistic research. Vermeulen does not see himself as an artist or a scientist. His mixed media installations, photography, video works and performances try to visualize the invisible. In his formally minimalist ’bio-installations’ - installations made from various media, referring to laboratories where scientific experiments are carried out - he relates basal biological techniques to ecological, political, social and other lines of reasoning. Vermeulen often works with the elements light, water and single-celled algae. His work has been shown, among others, at STUK Louvain and de Warande in Turnhout." (argos festival 2005 catalogue)
