INFORMATION DAYS 2000

SCREENING

Since 1997 argos offers an annual overview of the most recent innovative Belgian audio-visual production with its fall festival information days. This event can be considered a pivotal point for anything that’s stirring in the audio-visual sphere. The emphasis is towards work that does not allow for easy categorisation, towards self-willed work, which is experimental, unconventional , or which explicitly spans a bridge to other art forms. Creative documentaries, video works, sound pieces, CD-ROMS and web-site projects by artists are introduced to a national and international public of professionals and interested persons. A media library, temporarily set up in the argos exhibition space, puts the new artistic audio-visual output of the past year at the disposal of the public. A programme can be compiled and screened à la carte on site. Apart from that there are also non-stop projections. The fourth edition, which took place from 15 to 19 November 2000, paid attention to historical work, next to the recent creations of over 300 artists. The rewind segment of the programme presented the results of the first phase of the argos preservation programme. This phase is related to the seventies. The 5th edition of the information days will take place from 10 to 14 October 2001.

From 15 to 19 November 2000 the argos information days presented a cross section of the variety of artistic, innovative and experimental audio-visual art works made in Belgium over the last year. Productions by internationally renowned artists as Michel François, Joëlle Tuerlinckx, Marie-José Burki, Guillaume Bijl, Johan Grimonprez, Thierry De Mey, Wim Vandekeybus and others were shown as well as works by creative young talents who stand out with their inventiveness and their joy in creating unconventional images.

Around 450 films, videos, CD-ROMs, Internet works by nearly 300 artists were presented. A temporary media library installed for five days in the argos gallery space gave the public the opportunity to keep up with the latest trends in Belgian audio-visual production. Apart from this the REWIND programme segment paid attention to endangered productions from the 70s which were recently preserved by argos. Over 100 productions by 35 artists were concerned. All titles could be viewed within the information days media library. A selection was presented at the Brussels Film Museum on November 14th and 19th, and on November 16th in the Centre Brussels 2000. One of the highlights was the screening of the collective artists’ film, which was presented by Jacques Charlier as a contribution to the 1971 Paris Biennale, which had been considered lost. The artist introduced the film at the Film Museum on November 14th. This co-production with Bruxelles/Brussel 2000, is an incentive to set up a permanent video library at argos in the short term.
